Press Release

~Supporting research activities in response to recent price increases and labor shortages~

Lazuli Inc. (headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Seigen Hagiwara; hereinafter Lazuli), which conducts research and provides data, has announced that “Restaurant AI Research,” for which it provides research and data, will be used in Professor Kozo Ueda’s research at Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics (located in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) starting in February 2025.

Professor Ueda of Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics focuses his research on prices and monetary policy. Regarding the data used in his research, compared with POS data used in supermarkets and other stores, price data for the service industry has lagged in development, making detailed analysis of price trends difficult. Even basic statistics such as the timing of price revisions for individual products and the range of price fluctuations were not sufficiently understood. Because there were limits to collecting data independently, he turned his attention to Lazuli’s “Restaurant AI Research” service, which provides reliable data that can capture price changes and demand trends in the service industry.

In particular, the data provided by Lazuli is tagged with detailed attributes such as store format and menu category, enabling detailed time-series analysis of price changes and volume changes in the service industry. This will allow the professors’ research to track price fluctuations over time, evaluate inflation indicators and relative price changes, and conduct more precise economic analysis. They also aim to create price indicators for the service industry and provide useful information for financial institutions and policymakers.

Against the backdrop of continuing price increases in Japan and the expectation that this research will contribute to important domestic decision-making, including monetary policy, Lazuli plans to provide the laboratory with data from around 1,000 stores that will be useful for research such as pricing revision frequency and the restaurant price index.

Through its support for Professor Kozo Ueda’s research, Lazuli will further promote its social contribution activities and explore the potential for broader economic analysis using data.
